Project Management Fundamentals
A best practices course for team members aspiring to become project managers Making the transition from team member to team leader in a project environment can be a significant challenge. Although the prospective project team leader can learn some of the fundamentals by simply reading one of the excellent texts that are available, there is no substitute for live experience with actual project management problems. Case study based introductory courses provide a good simulation of real project conditions but can seem almost overwhelming for someone who has never been responsible for managing an actual project. The result is often discouragement and a lack of self-confidence that actually makes it more difficult to make the transition to effective project management. This two-day introductory course is intended to help bridge that gap. The participants will actually conduct a real, but vastly simplified, project of actually planning and constructing a two dimensional bridge. There are enough surprises and requirements for careful attention that all teams will make many mistakes, but simple enough that every team will successfully complete their project (albeit with schedule and budget overruns). A detailed lessons learned document will be prepared, then the basic principles of project management will be discussed and applied to the bridge project. Each participant will thereby gain important insight into the value of best practice principles in reducing the probability of serious error in real projects. seminar goalsParticipants will learn the principles of best practice in
